Institute for Steel Construction Studies Courses
Structural Safety in Steel Construction

Module: Structural Safety in Steel Construction

You will find the contents and further information on the course in the module catalogue of the masters's program "Bauingenieurwesen".

Objectives

The students have detailed knowledge about the structural behavior of steel structures which are susceptible to stability failure and about the Fatigue Limit State. After completion of the module the students have the ability to identify and solve stability and fatigue problems. Solution strategies and specific procedures of solution are presented which include the application of analytical as well as numerical procedures. The students are familiar with the relevant design standards. With regard to its content the module addresses various specific problems of structures for on- and offshore wind turbines.

Topics

  • calculation methods according to national and international standards
  • plastic hinge theory
  • stability of beams and frames, 2nd order theory
  • determination of buckling lengths and buckling loads
  • uniform build-up and laced compression members (e.g. lattice towers)
  • lateral torsional buckling
  • plate buckling
  • stability of shell structures, especially tubular towers of wind turbines
  • material fatigue (fundamentals to design verification, nominal stress- and structural stress concept, wind turbines)

Exam

The exam exists of theoretical and calculation tasks.
